Alterations to Princes Bridge – your say..

The City of Melbourne 2012-13 Budget includes a $5.6m spend on bike lane works to better connect the city’s cycling network.Ten key projects were outlined in this budget announcement including the introduction of dedicated bike lanes on Princes Bridge.

Princes Bridge is one of Melbourne’s major thoroughfares for cyclists, pedestrians, trams and motorists. It is also a critical transport interchange between Flinders Street Station, the tram network and pedestrian traffic.

The City of Melbourne is proposing changes to Princes Bridge that will significantly improve the safety and access for cyclists and other road users.

They have been working on a design with VicRoads that has involved detailed analysis and modelling to assess the impact of these works, not just on this intersection, but on traffic flow throughout the CBD. Before finalising this design, they are committed to consulting with major organisations and stakeholders with a substantial interest in these works.

BIKE LANES for La Trobe Street – your say

A plan to install bike lanes along the length of La Trobe street seeks to make the thoroughfare safer for all users. The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

Residents 3000 continues to lobby for a change of venue for this Show. We have nothing against the MIFGS as an event, just the misuse of this World Heritage site each year.We find it hard to believe that there is no detriment to Carlton Gardens, and moreover, the people of Victoria find themselves deprived of this place of recreational enjoyment for as long as MIFGS takes to set up, host the show, and dismantle the stalls…unless of course they want to pay the entry fee!

We also note that cyclists are ignoring the “No Cycling” signs and thoroughly enjoying the changed conditions while the show is setting up…meandering through on their push bikes or just whizzing…

21st December 2010 Council Meeting

The Big Item here is The Closure of Swanston Street...making it a thoroughfare for trams, cyclists and pedestrians with some vehicular exceptions).

Residents 3000 is supportive of Council’s plans and proposals, the only concern being the ‘mix’ of cyclists and pedestrians .Cyclists will not be affected by car doors being unexpectedly opened in their path, but will they….ride on the footpaths, ride against pedestrian traffic and tram traffic, ride across pedestrian crossings and ignore traffic lights? We hope not, but our “walkers” constantly complain.

So please, cyclists, forget the “short cut” and take the “right cut” when you traverse Swanston Street, and we shall all be happy. And Peds, please observe the code too…no stepping out onto cycle paths, jay walking and taking your off-leash dogs out on the road. (Oh, we forgot, but you didn’t, did you? Your poop-scoop!)
