Hello to Residents of Melbourne’s CBD!

We had a wonderfully successful AGM on 26th November 2014. Our President John Dall’Amico gave a report on progress in the previous 12 months and the Treasurer Dr Sue Saunders made an effort not to send the audience to sleep with a report on our financial status and how we need to boost our membership.

She outlined the possibility that Residents 3000 could be self sustaining with sufficient membership numbers, especially then the number of people living in the Melbourne CBD is growing exponentially at the moment. (It is such a great place to live!).

A new committee of nine members was elected.  Subsequently, on Monday 1st December elections to the executive positions were completed.   With a larger committee in place we are planning more events for 2015.  An important focus will be increasing membership. As part of the meeting Andrew Wailes (leader and conductor) gave us a fascinating insight into the history of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.  It was so sad to hear that local and state government are contemplating closing down the long term residence of the Choir and Orchestra – the Drill Hall on the corner of William and A’Beckett Street.  It is the home of the Royal Historical Society of Melbourne plus a number of other community groups. Residents 3000 is active in helping find a way to retain the building with its present tenants.

We were all surprised when some of the members of the The Royal Philharmonic Choir stood up and gave us a beautiful impromptu bracket of three Christmas related songs.

After that  the choir members joined us for a luscious snack of sandwiches and refreshments from the extensive Kelvin upstairs bar.  It was not your every day boring old AGM.
