Residents 3000 is an community group for residents in the Central Business District (CBD) of Melbourne, the capital City of Victoria, Australia. The name derives from our postcode – 3000.  Since inception in 1992 the “CBD” as such has expanded to include the Docklands Area, Southbank and North Melbourne.  Residents of these areas are considered to also live in the “CBD” and as such are welcome to join the group, especially as many people who live close by actually work in the postcode 3000 area.

Melbourne has a large resident population – and it’s growing. We live in a vibrant and active city, many of us in “vertical streets” or high rise buildings. For those of us who have lived in the suburbs perhaps, this is quite different. However, everything we could possibly need is close at hand. Our CBD is a centre for the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, sport and tourism. Right here at our doorstep! We have also been referred to as the “cultural capital” of Australia and one of the “most liveable”. The first federal parliament of Australia was convened here in the city’s heart, at the now UNESCO World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building and the beautiful Carlton Gardens that showcase this site.  And for relaxation, we have many bars, shops, lane way culture and other entertainment.  Life in the CBD is never dull!

Newcomers find they soon know more people than they ever might have in the suburbs. Why? We meet and greet in the City, and get to know traders, buskers and other residents. Some of us are city workers. Very convenient. Some are retired.  And some are students, from here or overseas. We are a community.

Residents 3000 was set up “unofficially” in 1992 when a group of people came together at Mietta’s restaurant to plan how best the interests of CBD residents could be progressed. This coincided with Melbourne  City Council  starting to encourage more people to live in the City – through the “ Postcode 3000”campaign. (In those days there was virtually no residential areas in Docklands or Southbank.)  The first Residents 3000 group became an incorporated association in 1993 ( our certificate of Incorporation- Incorporation-Certificate R3000 ) and has continued to grow and thrive. We  ourselves continue to represent residents in relation to the Council, the State Government and others, such as developers and businesses who have an impact on our lives. We also want to connect with each other and meet to discuss concerns and issues or simply have social exchange.

We best describe ourselves as “a community group that Connects, Supports and Represents CBD residents”. We exchange with each other and the broader community mostly through this website which is “our voice”.
