This is simply UNACCEPTABLE to CBD residents , and surely to all passers by. This junk was placed here on Friday afternoon (14/01/2011) and is still there Sunday morning, 2 days later. Council always seems defensive when complaints are made about rubbish but we believe that enforcement officers randomly driving through the City’s streets and dealing with offenders such as this is the only way. ALE – your response is odd to say the least! Why is it “acceptable” – and what do you mean by “acceptable.” Or are you joking??
Dumping rubbish in the street is silly, isn’t it? Or should we ALL do it – would that make you happy? Can we dump it outside your place?
Garbage/rubbish is a major problem in all cities around the world. Can you find anyone who would agree with you?
This newsletter and the Residents 3000 organisation is made up of people resident in the CBD. We believe that at least 99% of these people would agree with the idea of keeping our streets clean and free of dumped rubbish.
Perhaps you would like to start an organisation of residents who find dirty and rubbish laden streets “perfectly acceptable”.
Perhaps you might even stand for election to the City Council on this platform at the next election?
Suggest you try this platform out on your neighbours and test their reaction.
No, I wasn’t joking, although I was maybe exaggerating. I meant that claiming that some non-decomposable looking house items being on the curb for a couple of days over the weekend being “simply UNACCEPTABLE to CBD residents” is way too strong. I personally don’t mind it at all, and I wouldn’t mind it being dumped outside my place either if it was just for the weekend, or even a week or two.
I know a few people who do agree with me that rubbish is not a major problem in Melbourne. Your assumption that 99% of people will agree with you is probably just that, an assumption, no? Or have you done the polling? Like I said before, I am a CBD resident and I do disagree.
I have no problem with res3000 claiming this is unacceptable to res3000, but I object to being implicitly spoken for.
Hello Ale -Thank you for your comments giving us an opportunity to point you in the right direction for disposal of hard rubbish (which everyone has from time to time).It is not about polling or polarisation of the community as to whether it’s OK or not. It is simply not OK and the City of Melbourne takes a dim view of inappropriate rubbish dumping. Council is not responsible for the removal of hard waste/rubbish on an ongoing basis. It is considered an offence to dump hard rubbish as depicted in the photo and if an ID can be made, the offending party will receive a fine.
However, the good news is, like other municipalities, Council does offer a free annual waste collection of hard waste to rate payers. So when you and your friends do have such items, perhaps you could get together, contact Council, and make arrangements.( Tel 9658 9658 from 7.30 am to 5pm, the earlier you ‘phone, the better!) There are, however, a few restrictions with regards to the amount and type of hard waste ratepayers can dispose of.
We have 18,000 residents in the City and if each and every one did this, there would be dirty chaos.

I am aware of the hard rubbish removal collection, and I have used it in the past myself. Neither me nor my friends would do what was depicted on the photo.
I also understand that if all 18000 would do this, it would be a very big problem. The fact is that almost noone does do it though, so it remains, in my eyes, an almost trivial problem.
I was not aware though that res3000 had any formal links to the City of Melbourne council. Could you please confirm that there is indeed a link? Or was that just me reading too much into that last comment?
Good , we agree then. Perhaps you are just being “picky”. Not sure what you mean by “formal links”. Suggest you read our website, especially down the Index on the left hand side and find your answer. There you will find all our links and hopefully many more in the future.

Residents 3000 is a democratic organisation. We believe that our view about leaving rubbish in the street represents the view of our membership. And I suggest our view is supported by a majority of residents – no, there is no proof. How could there be? I suggest you ask around other residents of your acquaintance and see if they agree with you.
If you do this we would be glad to hear the outcome.
