Residents 3000 has lobbied for Electoral Reform for many a month and the State Govt. has agreed to conduct a limited review. We continue to lobby for ATTENDANCE VOTING rather than postal voting…this is in MCC’s hands to change but they are unwilling. We continue to ask “why”?
“Community Engagement” or rather lack of, is one of the ongoing concerns of resident groups throughout the City of Melbourne.
With regard to Electoral Reform, there has been no review since 2001 and it seems that the current system must serve our councillors well. MCC steadfastly refuse to change the voting system to ATTENDANCE rather than postal and it is in their domain to do so, rather than state government’s.
In asking government for a review ( and all we have asked for is a review) of the Qualification period for new voters, we resident groups have even been described by one councillor as “..seeking to discriminate against not just international students but all recent migrants to Melbourne…” and undermining of their intelligence to make informed decisions! Oh, what lengths some will go to, to protect the status quo…
